Thread: xfce 4.8, xubuntu distribution the perfect candidate?
since event of xfce 4.8, different distributions have decided implement recent version of desktop environment flavor distribution. interesting compare xubuntu other distribution inplementing xfce 4.8 version. no distribution perfect, best balanced one?
given experience since outing of xubuntu on 10.04 xfce 4.8 opinion in terms of xubuntu following criteria?
1) fast bootup speed (like slackware , derivative)
2) possibility of passing thru login manager directly x environment given user (even root user) (this not possible debian)
3) use of recent kernel , simple , efficient strategy problematic wifi , graphic drivers (bcm, nvidia) , dual display settings (as ubuntu or mint)
4) efficient os in terms of printer implementation (this not case slackware seems troublesome brother printer drivers under cups, amongst others)
5) broad access variety of software (ubuntu or debian like)
6) ease of installation
7) reliability
xfce 4.8 came out on 1/16/2011. noticed xubuntu 10.04 booted quicker , noticeable more responsive 11.04. reason 10.04 used xfce 4.6 while 11.04 used 4.8 (i'm guessing 4.8 have been implemented then)? also, 11.04 failed install on 1 challenged pc-- never boot after installation) 10.04 installed fine on it.
otherwise ease of installation, variety of software , reliability excellent, , in many ways superior standard ubuntu. 1 exception on years i've experienced 1 specific glitch while using xubuntu on various machines: mouse cursor disappears desktop sometimes, unpredictable after going screensaver. pointer location of mouse still exists in memory; can tell moving mouse around desktop in hopes of spotting it. never do, various text fields , icons highlight hover on them. that's enough exit , reboot computer , that's way mouse cursor visible again. logging in , out doesn't solve problem either. glitch existed of 10.04 can't still issue in later versions because ive elected reinstall using long term support version, 10.04 version.
1 huge item wish xubuntu , xfce implement: have graphical response effect of sort when clicking on desktop program icon. once double click on one, , wait while, double click again make double click successful , not interpreted computer 2 single clicks. if did double-click program icon find out later when program launches twice. stands there no way user know if sent double-click on top of icon or (mistakingly) 2 single-clicks. frustrating scenario , whenever happens makes user think less of operating system. waiting long spans of time waiting program open frustrating when user realizes issued single click. advice users: 'you should more careful' when clicking icon worthless if goal getting them *enjoy* operating system. why should user have careful when doing easy activating program want activate. should effortless or else operating system judged poorly compared operating system engineers effortless.
other network browsing inside thunar file manager top issue. understand has been taking care of in xfce 4.8 though.
comparison gnome:
think xfce settings manager vastly superior gnome methods of fine tuning desktop environment, isn't logically @ times. imagine, why in world expected new user change system fonts, themes or visual effects have to: right-click on desktop, select<change desktop background>. think selection applies indicates, 'wallpaper'. shuttleworth pointed out several releases ago, there many little 'paper-cuts' users experiences gnome. review
