Changing domains - Joomla! Forum - community, help and support
i hosted on dreamhost. have old website using joomla 1.6. under domain name ending in *.ca
instead of trying migrate or upgrade latest joomla, built new website closely mirroring old website, using latest joomla 3.8. website under domain name ending in *.xyz.
the old website has links , pictures url *.ca in new website copied , pasted webpages old website. left links , pictures *.ca url. plan change domain name of new website domain name of old website, , retire old website. question is, when that, urls have change in new website when has *.ca domain name? ones *.ca or ones have url of *.xyz?
i want url links in new website set when make domain switch, urls work without me having change of them.
thanks can give.

this 1 reason why people should not use absolute url references in websites because, know, when people want retire old sites (or move content 1 site another) these hard-coded links break apart.wisaak wrote:the old website has links , pictures url *.ca
that's why it's better use relative url references. if people don't understand difference between absolute , relative url references, there must hundreds of articles on internet explain what, why , wherefore.
depends on how (and what) copied; mentioned above, if material copied included absolute url references you're in bind. if copied articles using j! 1.6 article manager, may ok (as long links within articles contain relative url references).wisaak wrote:in new website copied , pasted webpages old website.
good luck this. advice systematically work through links , change them; alternatively, write sql query remove hard-coded references *.ca new site's content.wisaak wrote:i want url links in new website set when make domain switch, urls work without me having change of them.
if tempted ask how write sql query achieve outcome, prepared long , complicated series of responses question.
i accept people "but have lot of these things , it's going headache change them all." yeah, but, again, i've mentioned twice in response, these problems begin when people hard-code domain names within site content instead of using relative urls. if people begin using relative url references within content avoids kinds of issues you're facing.
