Thread: Looking for an alternative to RAR...

i'm using rar compress backups of wii games buy so slow. i'm hoping find faster alternative comparable compression have 1 problem, i'm hoping it's compatible (win)rar...

comparison tried couple other compressors , here results:
rar -m5:
32m24.850s file size: 2.3 gb (2477389909 bytes)

7zip using -mx9:
32m16.169s file size: 2.3 gb (2504647320 bytes)

lbzip2
14m9.110s file size: 2.3 gb (2483616486 bytes)

lrzip using -l , -p 1 (unfortunately format linux-only):
06m11.257s file size: 2.3 gb (2481667764 bytes)

know (win)rar supports tar.gz2 , tar.bz2 archives afaik it's not possible compress archive , split tar.

hoping using tar + bzip2 work similar rar tar doesn't support multi-volume splits compression. surprised me thought split archives when necessary during compression rar does... know split don't want use output not compatible winrar, afaik.

suggestions?

you can use split, reassemble pieces cat. if need put on windows googling suggests following @ command prompt equivalent cat:
code:
copy /b piece1 + piece2 + piece_etc output_file.tgz
you use winrar on result.
