Thread: Windows NTFS problems
about 2 days ago got error message on computer stating ntfs file corrupted or missing. not first person problem since there guides on google on how fix both windows recovery disc , ubuntu.
i've tried fix problem using using ubuntu following this guide.
every time type in "sudo ntfsfix /dev/<device name>" (device name sda1 me).
message: "refusing operate on read-write mounted device /dev/sda1."
keep in mind i'm using newest version of ubuntu (11.10) , guide appears bit old. i've install lilo , attempted fix boot process way describes every time try brings commands sudo lilo.
tried fixing windows recovery disc kept getting message saying along lines of "windows cannot locate file."
have 1tb hard drive , there's 400gb of data on windows partition.
doing wrong?
if impossible fix (which don't want believe is) possible resize windows partition 400gb, make new windows partition, , transfer files need old partition new partition don't loose data?
in advance can help.
you need run chkdsk windows repaircd. did make 1 when windows still worked? download used recommend 1 charges $10. or know same 32 or 64 bit version of windows.
linux tools cannot full chkdsk, @ best make minor repair or 2 , set chkdsk flag, on next windows boot chkdsk runs.
vista/7 chkdsk
chkdsk [drive] /f /r
chkdsk c: /r
/f : fixes errors on disk.
/r : locates bad sectors , recovers readable information.
note if specify /r option, /p option implied. when specify chkdsk command without arguments, command checks current drive no options in effect. rerun until no errors.
