Thread: Program sequence break-captures in BASH

are there alternatives ">" in redirecting output file?

i'm running program in terminal wich generates continouosly updated text output, similar top-command. when abort program want send screen output file. problem when using '>' program continouosly sends screen output (appending) file (though appending piping not chosen), creating 1 huge f...g file. =/

want capture screen output displayed when break/abort program sequence. after typing skin of poor fingertips, found no solution kneel before gurus once again. there way make function?

(if somehow wasn't clear enough, i'm talking text captures now, not graphic screen caps)

simple example:
code:
 top > textfile
i want capture text output when quit top.
