Thread: Please help! Somehow moved root directory! Can't boot server
hello everyone,
reading. using ubuntu 10.04 lts server edition run file server lab. trying install matlab , had folder /mathworks_downloads/mathworksdownloads/ , wanted contents of mathworksdownloads moved 1 level since had copied folder somewhere else. tried use command:
$/mathworks_downloads/mathworksdownloads/ sudo mv * ../
think either had space between .. , /, maybe did sudo mv *.. / or perhaps somehow typed sudo mv /* .. i'm not sure did.
result somehow moved root directory knows where. couldn't use command line anymore, because there no directories cd or into. restarted , not able boot machine. tried use live cd see if data still okay, couldn't find of right folders.
server configuration: i'm new of this, apologies if doesn't make sense. have 3 drives, sda(250gb), sdb(2tb), sdc (2tb). created md0 , md1 make sdb , sdc raid partitions. had sdb0 , sdc0 swap pointed part of sda0 , sdb1 , sdc1 file system, mount point /-root , pointed somehow sda1. had sda1 bootable. hope makes sense. thought made sense few months ago created it, documentation terrible , don't remember.
help/advice might have appreciated. i'm new ubuntu , new command line interface server edition.
much!
ann
hey everyone,
didn't realize use ubuntu live cd used 1 gui , found files. raided drives seem intact , folders used in root in mathworks downloads folder. had symbolic link 2tb raided hard drives on in root, link broken, i'm hoping restore when copy folders rightful place. plan 1) try backup whatever can now, 2) copy root folders , links root. 3) shutdown, remove raided drives server, 4) see if server reboots. 5) if so, put raided drives in hope best.
update thread if works.
thanks,
ann
