Thread: best way to transfer everything to new desktop

i've installed ubuntu (currently 11.10) on creaky old dell optiplex. several times day, spontaneously reboots, when doing graphics-intensive stuff (e.g., opening stellarium sure shutdown/reboot). i've concluded problem largely puny hardware, , looking new more serious os-free system replace current one, on plan install ubuntu again. of course, i've installed lot of stuff on dell, , avoid going thru reinstalling programs. regularly backup utility. what's easiest way move on current hardware new (and presumably more stable) desktop?

what mean "everything"? data or applications installed later on? moving data easy if kept in home folder. moving applications difficult , not recommend doing it.
