Thread: How to get 3D capabilities working?
hi, have thinkpad t42 uses ati gpu.
with out-of-the-box drivers, video performance sluggish , want speed things up.code:$ sudo lspci | grep vga 01:00.0 vga compatible controller: ati technologies inc rv350 [mobility radeon 9600 m10]
according guide laptop video cards , 3d options, gpu directx9 capable. nice not faster 2d performance, 3d abilities going, too.
doing searching, discovered fglrx binary driver this, when installed , rebooted, cpu running @ 100% nonstop, window manager freaking out (i.e. focus on top window flashing on , off making impossible use terminal), , when tried out of x cntrl-alt-f1, paused second , kicked me right x. fortunately able uninstall it, , apparently no harm done.
remember pain nvidia drivers working on desktop years ago, i'm going ask before break something!
the rv350 no longer supported ati (http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/hardware) , such, proprietary drivers won't work (as can tell). stuck using opensource radeon drivers (see here feature support matrix: http://www.x.org/wiki/radeonfeature)
