Thread: new install on new in box computer, really happy. But wifi will not work

hello everyone,

first time user of linux based system. installed 11.10 little bit ago , seem have in line except, cannot seem wifi work properly.

-i go settings->network->wifi , when click "on" slides on second , turns "off".
-i have clicked on enable wireless in broadcast icon in top right hand corner nothing seems, click says nothing.
-i ran $ sudo lshw -c network , said network adapter disabled. have switch on on laptop know, can internet on windows 7 partition.
-i can online if hard wired
-i ran update manager (236 updates) , did nothing, looked drivers came nothing.


laptop lenovo i5, windows 7 , ubuntu. new out of box morning.

what have no figured out have intel centrino wireless-n 1000 card, trying use ndiswrapper utilize existing windows driver still having problems because of how new this.

first, downloaded ndiswrapper , extracted folder in windows. booted ubuntu , ran make file inside of extracted file. type commend $ndiswrapper -l , says cannot find version of nidswrapper.

other problem on wiki ndis not sure if wifi card supported, again new not sure doing.



little background, 3rd year cs student know fair amount of computers in general. have used windows entire life , bash few times compile programs. understand lot of corps. dont release documentation drivers can made linux systems , thats why ndiswrapper used native windows driver can run inside/(alongside?) ubuntu.


please move thread if should not in here, figured right subtopic. sorry if newbish.
