Desktop & Laptop (Different Question)

i have read , watched lot of information using laptop , desktop , limitations adobe has envoked in process???

anyway - mentioned before new lightroom , right int process of loading 12+ yaers of images , video in catalog located on desktop hard drive.

once loaded - want somehow use laptop go through each project , keyword inventory. what;s best way move/copy catalog form desltop laptop can - , when done, move back?

when work in lr need 2 things: lr catalog , photos (image files). without catalog lr "knows" nothing photos, , without photos cannot work in develop module - can work in library module , - instance - add keywords and/or titles. see question marks on photo frames in grid view , "missing photo" message in loupe view - not make impossible add keywords, titles, captions, etc.

if want keywording on laptop, need lr catalog - and, naturally, lr installed on laptop. photos can remain wherever are.

so have make catalog accessible laptop, , means catalog contains latest work , latest imports.

two possibilities:

a) easier , faster: external hard drive, put catalog on it, , connect desktop when work on in lr, connect laptop when want work on (in lr).

you had put previews folder on it, laptop can see previews.

the catalog file extension <  .lrcat>. find location going >edit >catalog settings >general tab.

the previews contained in folder has same name catalog extension <  .lrdat>. located next catalog file.

b) export catalog: every time finish working on desktop switch grid view, select <all photographs> in catalog panel (left side), press ctrl / cmd + select images, , go >file >export catalog. create new catalog. make accessible laptop still need external drive, don't gain using option (b), except lr might run bit slower when catalog on external drive.

if choose option (b) had same procedure - export catalog - make latest keywording visible on desktop.

it's bit cumbersome, i'd go option (a).

in case want work in develop module have make image files available laptop, too.
