First client work with SG, impressions.

i've delivered first client work graded sg, here's quick recap feedback, hope find useful.

 

problems:

- imported dpx sequence, did scene detection, program crashed every time clicked "split clips". had switch master prores4444 have sequence sliced without crashes.

- when pressing cmd-z (undo) while in right-mouse button edit mode mouse pointer disappears , have relaunch sg back. also, undo not working or 1 single cmd+z, program did several steps back.

- on "undo" appears "optimizing timeline" progress bar slow, , have abort time.

- per-clip pan&scan missing. had lot of pan scan , painful doing keyframes, hope adobe finds simple way deliver that.

- looks panel can't hidden or moved. 1920x1200 monitor have lot of empty space on right side, useful having option move panel on right side, or @ lease hide it.

- find difficult navigate through timeline, specially when it's zoomed out , want position second reference playhead
. mini-poput thumbnail, updating when scrubbing mouse on timeline, great find right clip in short time.

- found annoying when navigate through clips cmd+arrow, in/out point set. that's useful think need option disable it.

 

things didn't find out:

- shortcuts save/recall memories (like cmd+1, cmd+2...in other sw). used keypad, , works great, useful store temp memories.

- markers useful

- there keyboard shortcuts "toggle in out points" , "replay"?

- grade variations. think can grade variations adding more layers, in case it's needed grouping (like photoshop folders) , layer renaming (at least).

- multiple masks. know there aren't, please hardly needed.

 

what liked most:

- responsiveness. sg fast! worked on set late 2010 mbpro , found quick , responsive, had realtime playback!

- interface. straight point, once used it's simple , it's there. still room fore improvement it.

- render. render solid , "automatic color calibration" never had annoying quicktime gamma shift in preview proxies. option framing , one-click online/offline render , proxy size great.

- found comparing 2 playheads intuitive. didn't feel need still store. little difficult set when clips 1 next another. useful quick way set 2nd timeline , screen screen compare (e.g. mouse on clip compare + keystroke).

- right mouse button function it's great doesn't have control surface or on set, it's sensitive compared other softwares used. i'm using mouse , can precise. stated above, had problems undo.

- liked shortcut "copy grade clip below mouse position", handy

 

the obvious:

- support 3rd party video monitoring (blackmagic, aja, etc...)

- support more native formats (read: avchd)

- roundtrip premiere

 

tip:

i found out shortcut wasn't mentioned in documentation: ctrl+h (on mac) brings out "history" window.

 

i learning, maybe there "workflow" mistakes or mentioned missing there, tell me please

i think if adobe fix lot of things people suggesting, speedgrade great product. now, feels little bit "uncomplete". keep fingers crossed, maybe next week @ nab adobe show new!
