Thread: Device names jumping about

hi all,

on fresh install of 10.04 server, have 6 disks. 1 root filesystem, other 5 have been made raid5 filesystem using mdadm.

names of disk devices appear jumping - root filesystem installed onto /dev/sda2, on rebooting, changed /dev/sdc2. further reboot changed /dev/sda2. 5 raid-ed disks change suit , no 1 seems worse wear (although "mdadm monitoring" emails, saying

sparesmissing event had been detected on md device /dev/md0.

know /etc/fstab sets mounting according disk's uuid, rather device name. assuming that, disks power @ boot, it's first-come, first-served device assignments, e.g. /dev/sda2? that's explanation can come with, anyway.

normal behaviour? there can make permanent device name assignments, rather having them flap around?

cheers,
lyn

only way can see have hdds spun , ready before boot process starts. know goes against grain, emphasis on trying fast boot time. bios involved in fuller checks, if you've curtailed those, i'm not sure else work.
types of hdd connection talking here, might suggest - ide, sata, scsi?
