Thread: Ubuntu 10.04 suddenly went into busybox mode, saying it can't mount some drives
[first let me apologize: in pretty bad mood when started happening didn't take down notes of happening. clear mistake. here's hoping guru out there can fill in of blanks.]
i'm on gateway laptop that's around 3-4 years old, give or take, overheats. sure panicked when first overheated , auto shutdown on me there doesn't seem damage when happens, passed off should avoided not dangerous (at least, not very).
bit more history:
first ubuntu installation 9.10, 1.5 years ago (march/april 2010). didn't have life-threatening issues while using it. upgraded current version, 10.04 around year ago (oct. 2010) , in 10.04 had overheating issues. i'm not blaming lynx overheats---the first overheat cases largely due programming errors on part---but lately, laptop overheats while doing mundane tasks (randomly, not time), i'll relate next.
morning watching youtube videos when laptop overheated , auto shut down. so, took break computer, ate lunch, , returned afterwards start working again.
then, when booted found myself greeted busybox terminal, saying drives can't booted. root/x though listed 2 others, 1 root, 1 not (here's when didn't take note, sorry). then, here's list of did:
(1) tried running "mount root/x", root/x being 1 of drives indicated. fail. typed "exit", printed more cryptic errors me trying "kill init" or something. shut down manually switch.
(2) tried booting vista partition (note: grub loads fine). works fine. restart ubuntu again. busybox greets me once more type exit , shut down before.
(3) booted 11.04 live cd. works fine. navigated ubuntu partition check files...all fine.
(4) tried connecting internet report whats happening (here forums, yes). click on network icon @ taskbar, click name of our home network , suddenly, logged out. i'm thinking if mouse mistake on me i'm unsure...
(5) so, 11.04 asking me username , password don't have it. defeated, shut down.
(6) run 10.04 again, , time, busybox doesn't appear. starts disk check though, noting me of errors. fix , says "/tmp not ready". chose continue anyway.
(7) system restarts, no busybox ubuntu disk check again. runs fine time , log-in (my current session type this).
(8 ) check around stuff...everything seems fine. check on disks , reports nothing noteworthy (save 1 bad sector it's been there since summer , have reasons believe vista's fault).
more stuff:
