i trying create script, can launch desktop, open application , perform specific function within application. know if there reasonably straightforward way this?

that depends entirely on application.
there no general way of doing describe.
however, if application has command-line interface, in documentation see if specific function can called command line.
not applications provide command line interface, , give access subset of functionality through command line.
