the kernel stores list of environment variables , values each process, , inherit them child processes. exist @ runtime, , not stored in file or so. there virtual file in
/proc/<pid>/environ contains environment variables. kernel makes them visible virtual file. 1 can list them. example view variables of process 3940, 1 can do
cat /proc/3940/environ | tr '\0' '\n' each variable delimited binary 0 next one. tr replaces 0 newline.
