Thread: bootloader hell
hi. want install couple linux distributions alongside windows, , having trouble bootloader.
read here:
http://linuxbsdos.com/ask/2011/10/ex...a-fatal-error/
...that need ext4. choosing ext2. going tell me should using ext4 anyway? except simplicity (non-journaling), , know how mount ext2 in windows. mean, really? why should file system matter?
made small 200mb boot partition /boot. why? because more 1 linux, don't see why /boot should belong 1 or distribution's partition.
however, quote from:
http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/to...x-and-windows/
"i have no comprehensive knowledge separated boot partitions once tried share 1 /boot partition on several linux distros in virtual box , things got quite messed (i suspect every distro wants own /boot directory).
have not tried using ntfs partitions under linux think should find out beforehand if able use shared data way want it.
luc"
experience resinstalling windows lose mbr, , have no idea how mbr point /boot partition again. although trying this:
http://gr8idea.info/os/tutorials/linux/mbr.html
ok, help. guess googled , rtfm. i'm still not sure multiple linuxi sharing /boot partition, or if should let 1 distro take care of /boot partition , let that. or if should use extended boot record fancy boot menu, didn't when installed ubuntu now.
ps. have used more configuration, in opensuse, because boot menu has entry 2-partition external drive (from installed ubuntu), saying has xp pro (actually, backup of ntldr).
when multi-booting windows , different linux distros (three) used grub ubuntu , did not install other grub distro. had worked great me. didn't have separate /boot partition. thing had come ubuntu after installing other distros update grub (sudo update-grub). , had repeat after every kernel update in distro.
