Thread: Stopping lxdm crashes my laptop

good morning all

have old dell latitude c800 ati mobility graphics. running badly under windows xp decided give lubuntu go , installed lubuntu 11.10.

caused split/fuzzy screen problem. found 'cure' in doing

sudo service lxdm stop

sudo xorg -configure

edit xorg.config , move /etc/x11

sudo service lxdm start

unfortunately far trying stop lxdm. screen clears , shows few lines of text quickly, clears again , left flashing _ in top left corner.

here can nothing other reboot laptop.

previoulsy had linux mint 11 lxde running along side windows xp , fix worked first go. trying lubuntu 11.10 worked faster off livecd mint did off hdd!

suggestions might happening when stop service or if there alternative method can use set xorg.conf welcome feeling have bitten off more should have

are running commands tty or within lxde (lxterminal)?
if running while running lxde surely cause desktop close lxdm starts desktop environment , if stop lxdm take desktop environment down it. commands posted meant run tty.

this, press ctrl+alt+f2. cause shift tty2 , presented console asked login. there type commands , should fine
