Thread: Boots directly to grub>

i had ubuntu 11.10 installed dual boot windows 7 on dell inspiron 8600 single hard disk. started unit morning (12/1/2011) , booted windows did windows update , rebooted ubuntu (which default boot selection). went update manager , selected available updates downloaded , installed. wanted use program in windows , selected restart shutdown menu. when computer restarted, displayed dell flash screen , displayed terminal type screen headed "gnu grub version 1.99-12ubuntu5" , displayed "grub> " prompt.

don't know how system move point. there apparently no 'man' page , abbreviated. it's though there no operating system on @ all. desperately need windows installation because has device driver not available anywhere more.
