how can you use Custom Fields? - Joomla! Forum - community, help and support

so, little background: have been using joomla since 1.0, , ive done lots , lots of sites in joomla. few years ago, main job (large university) adopted drupal cms, , forced learn , use drupal. still prefer joomla, after many years of immersing myself in drupal, think way drupal integrates custom fields , "views" genius.

i excited see custom fields added joomla core, havent been able see how should used best advantage. tell me or suggest ways can integrate custom fields content category , have practical usefulness? thought perhaps setting category blog link in menu allow use custom field settings sort content, dont see way that...

i feel im missing obvious, thoughts?

if consider category of articles, have common thread or threads connecting them, example, if category "eastern botanical gardens" might wright articles that, using fields filled in on each like: logo image; link google map; day ticket price; notable exhibits, , forth.

i use fields button insert fields articles (using regular labs "content templater" ensure articles have consistent formatting).
