Adobe Reader XI won't open "some" PDF's


issue

  • some pdf's try open fail (whether on network or local pc)
  • note: pdf's load without problem network, local pc, or internet embedded (ie)

 

what i'm seeing

  • i double click pdf , reader loads "open recent file" splash screen, file not launch.
  • i tried launch reader first , "file open" same results.
  • no error message presented
  • no errors/warnings found in application event log

 

environment

  • adobe reader xi (11.0.2)
  • tested on both windows xp (w/ ie 8) , windows 7 (w/ ie 9 & 10)

 

reader installation

the reader installed customization tool with following:

  1. suppress display of eula
  2. protected view off (default)
  3. disable product improvement program
  4. also, after installation, push out registry change hklu hive disable "protected mode @ startup".

 

steps taken haven't worked

  1. clicked button "select default pdf handler" under preferences | general
  2. did application repair "add/remove" programs in windows control pane in both win xp , win 7
  3. disabled "enhanced security" under preferences | security (enhanced)
  4. rebooted , tried again
  5. ran 5 outstanding windows updates, rebooted , tried again (non of updates related nvidia graphics proposed in post)

 

if has idea on how identify fix or if files i'm trying open corrupt in way, appreciate help.  problem idea files corrupt, there numberous files scattered throughout different folders on network , see no reason why many would/could corrupt.

unfortunately not have solution you, additional question: can open these malfunctioning pdfs opening adobe reader first, use open , navigate 1 of these pdfs?
