Thread: Recommendations re backup folders please
i need fresh install on old phillips freevents laptop (currently running dual boot xp + ubuntu 11.04). after install i'd more or less before, though haven't got lot of additionally installed applications , don't mind reinstaalling apps , when needed, don't want lose basic settings or accumulated data. i've been reading on backing prior install , have pretty decided use rsync via ethernet desktop machine (also dual boot xp + 11.04). understand how this, documentation i've looked @ far rather vague , put it. i'd appreciate specific guidance experienced users on following:
1. need other home folder? (if so, what?)
2. there in home folder should exclude backup? (eg because might cause conflicts when restored clean installation.)
2. on remote machine should store backup? (eg should create "laptop backup" folder in home folder on desktop, or create separate folder in root, or even, have suggested, new partition? if other first option, please point me in direction of clear, step step instructions.)
3. on friend's suggestion, i'm running xfce rather gnome. i'm minded try lubuntu when re-install. make difference of answers above?
i'll grateful advice.

oldfreds post good.
1. backup personal data wherever store them. should know if somewhere else in home folder.
2. there settings (typically in 'hidden files' starting .) in home directory, need not exclude it.
2b. put best you. don't put inside plan backup (backup /home /something-else). if have external hard drive, might best. make sure put on partition linux file-system, otherwise permissions files , folders garbled. alternative make image or compressed archive file, example tarball.
3. no not big issue. can run system several desktops installed , select 1 use @ login screen.
luck
