there few methods moving site https://docs.joomla.org/copying_a_joomla_website (and many others) prefer akeeba https://docs.joomla.org/copying_a_joomla_website#akeeba.
if want test site on server there 2 ways it.
1. create subdomain , install joomla there
2. create sub directory install joomla
my preference #1 because hosts place subdomain directory level www folder not under it. doing prevents confusion , (with hosts allow it) domain can pointed @ folder there no need edit anything. if move folders please see https://docs.joomla.org/moving_the_site ... irectories (note paths given examples not actual paths).
