Thread: User Permissions running luckybackup
perhaps 1 of experts here can me problem having re: access permissions. bear me still relatively new linux/ubuntu, having been windows man working life (and dos of old enough remember ...)
using ubuntu 11.10 on laptop.
trying run backup using luckybackup work *some* of users on home laptop. (luckybackup - impressed - comes in 2 flavours, 'ordinary' , 'super user'. using latter want backup users on laptop. ask me authentication password when run it, no problems there. seems run ok in package, open being corrected here, dependent upon results of discussion below)
on laptop there 3 user accounts - mine, wife's , business account.
when run backup, files copied external drive no problems.
same business account.
however, wife's not copy @ - backup says cannot access files, despite being run in 'super user' mode.
have logged in account , looked @ access permissions home directory (home capital h). can "create , delete", 'group' can "access" files , "others" can "access" well. file access type set blank (actually says "-")
changed permissions group , others "read only" , applied "set permissions enclosed files". acknowledgement box came , worked away applying permissions. (btw main control box altered permissions blank ("-") whilst happening)
came out of , went /home (small h) 3 user directories listed. here, can see files (as expected), can see business directory files not mine. no problem here administrator' , business account both 'standard' accounts.
logged in me (administrator remember) went /home (small h). can see files (as expected), can see business account files, still can't see wife's files - expect.
have compared file access permissions , user account modes both wife's account , business account , cannot see marks them being different each other.
question is: how change access permissions of files (all of them) , home folder 'see-able' me , backup program. account folders owned 'root' ubuntu doesn't have 'root' user (or ubuntu bible book tells me).
appreciated 1 of these people likes have things backed in case shady character decides walk off machine.
