Thread: sudo password doesn't work

i'm running ubuntu 10.04 on laptop, , today when tried run update-manager wouldn't install updates since wouldn't accept password root. tried running other commands (both gui programs , terminal) required me enter root password. none of them worked. don't see how have accidentally changed root password. there way fix this?

is system set automatically log in? if not, sudo password same log-in password.

if password you've forgotten, here's how reset it:

  • reboot machine
  • after power on self-test screen, press , hold shift key
  • when grub boot menu comes up, select boot ubuntu in recovery mode.
  • at recovery mode menu, choose drop root shell.
  • at prompt, type:

code:
passwd your-user-name
obviously replace your-user-name ubuntu username.
  • choose new password
  • reboot pc.
