Creating buttons for a search page

i have site has on 3k records searchable.

i need create new method of drop down list using buttons, drop down lists not work on telephone.

the site http://www.tyneships.co.uk, if have there see problem.

so thought if narrowed options down set of buttons, each single letter on it, create on fly page each letter exists, contents change regularly.

i have recordset, , have written code reads in , prints out each available first letter of possible search items. need create button using php holds letter.

in html, following code used:

 

<input  type="text" name="button" value="a" />

 

i have value of "a" in variable called $b, not post variable

 

how $b appear in place of "a".

i not know if syntax error problem or what, have thought there should way it.

i have investigated newt_button(x,y,"button_name") function, supposed create new button @ location x,y  not seem exist in version of xammp php (5.3.1).

can help?

 

dreamweaver 5.5 on win 7 os

i tried searching through site , don't see drop-downs referring to.  drop-downs work fine on phones android , ios.  i've never experienced issues them.  issue experiencing them?

 

as other values, if want $b appear "a" is, <?php echo $b; ?>  "a" is.

 

unfortunately, cannot see syntax issues php processed prior page load need post source code if wish syntax error.
