hi skym0366,
gap won't found in programs menus. it's extension (perhaps "plug-in" might better word?) gives more tools , options when using gimp. if, after installing gap, open gimp , through various menus ("filters", example), should see choices animation weren't there before.
here couple of links tutorials started.

gimp beautiful program, gap makes better (and more fun!)
enjoy!
edit: skym0366, may have misunderstood question (sometimes happens). apparently did open gimp , check animation options, aren't there. correct?
did encounter same problem once, , if remember correctly, needed upgrade version of gimp had @ time. fact terminal exited on own, when installing, seems odd , might why gap didn't install correctly.
thing know sure, when i'm wanting try new software, it's make sure system has been updated first. check requirements new software. i'm sorry not have been more helpful (i'm still learning, too), else pop in add better information.
