Thread: This could b a BUG

i've been working few days on this, following other threads same problem, , i've seen b4. time in big leagues, b bug. if not, still major headache.

borrowed material because fellow sufferer catalogs process nicely.

trying finish installation of ubuntu 10.04 (lucid lynx). got interrupted partway through. when tried finish it, got error messages. @ point decided start blogging situation, had tried advice enter these commands:

apt-get clean
apt-get autoclean
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade
(these required "sudo" before each command or "sudo -i" first.) first 3 went ok, after "apt-get upgrade," got this:

might want run `apt-get -f install' correct these.
following packages have unmet dependencies:
gnome-power-manager: depends: devicekit-power (>= 011) not installable
indicator-session: depends: devicekit-power not installable
initramfs-tools: breaks: mountall (< 2.0~) 1.0 installed
mountall: predepends: libc6 (< 2.11) 2.11.1-0ubuntu7 installed
ubuntu-desktop: depends: usplash not installed
usplash-theme-ubuntu: depends: usplash (>= 0.5.30) not installed
e: unmet dependencies. try using -f.
running "apt-get -f install" generated similar message, ending these 2 lines:
e: error, pkgproblemresolver::resolve generated breaks, may caused held packages.
e: unable correct dependencies
before this, had run error, "could not resolve 'us.archive.ubuntu.com,'" 1 suggested solution wait software repository sort out problem server. in present case, however, had been having these dependency errors weeks, each time had booted ubuntu on particular computer , had attempted update it. did not think problem repository in case.

ran different search , got new set of suggestions. in @ least 1 case, suggestion uninstall , reinstall gnome , kde desktops did not seem have solved problem. tried approach of going through list of problem packages (quoted above) , attacking them 1 one. error initramfs-tools (above) looked simple enough: went synaptic, clicked on edit > fix broken packages, right-clicked on initramfs-tools, , marked reinstallation. when clicked "apply," said, "could not apply changes! fix broken packages first." tried again, time selecting "mark removal." said have "mark additional required changes." said ok. marked dozens of other packages, including synaptic labeled "(essential)." clicked apply. said, "essential packages removed. may render system unusable!" cancelled that. tried marking different package -- usplash-theme-ubuntu -- reinstallation. again, showed me list of dozens of other packages removed; , again, when tried go ahead that, got indication trying remove essential packages. tried suggestion type "dpkg --purge (package name)," beginning initramfs-tools. had quit symantec make go. still listed dozen programs depended on initramfs-tools. figured trying remove lead same long list before.

seemed option, mentioned many, of reinstalling ubuntu might turn out fastest (if not only) option left. facing possibility, went , proceeded through option of uninstalling initramfs-tools in synaptic, including essential packages. generated new list of problems.

had call quits time being. got situation few days later. see things stood now, went symantec. said had 7 broken packages. marked first on list, gnome-power-manager, updating, , clicked apply. said this:
error occurred
following details provided:
w: failed fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...buntu1_all.deb
undetermined error [ip: 91.189.92.166 80]
[it gave me number of other error messages similar one.]
made us.archive still dysfunctional. killed synaptic , went system > administration > software sources > other software. checked of us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ sources , clicked remove. clicked close > reload. not surprisingly, got this:
not download repository indexes
repository may no longer available . . . .
closed that. got message:
error occurred
following details provided:
e: package fontconfig-config needs reinstalled, can't find archive it.
closed too. software sources closed. tried restarting synaptic, last error message ("an error occurred") recurred. retried sequence suggested @ start of post:commands:

sudo -i
apt-get clean
apt-get autoclean
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade
"apt-get update" line gave me bunch of error messages along lines of "ign http://security.ubuntu.com/ lucid-security" , bunch along lines of "w: failed fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/lucid-security" errors, , closed this:
e: index files failed download, have been ignored, or old 1 used instead.
repeated apt-get update command, got same thing. went ahead "apt-get upgrade," got this: "e: package fontconfig-config needs reinstalled, can't find archive it." synaptic wouldn't start. tried "dpkg --purge fontconfig-config." said "dependency problems prevent removal of fontconfig-config." problems "libfontconfig1 depends on fontconfig-config" , "fontconfig depends on fontconfig-config." tried dpkg libfontconfig1, gave me list of hundred dependencies.

had seen several other threads in complete reinstall seemed solution. had reached point myself.
