Thread: Firefox won't work?

i want before anything, new linux, ubuntu, , forum. installed ubuntu 11.10 on old vista computer , love far, need help. searched thread , couldn't find one, posting one. if me, brilliant.

installed ubuntu correctly , working fine, firefox not. whenever opened first time, went google. went yahoo right after that, froze. not did firefox freeze, seemed whole computer froze. mouse still move, nothing else worked. had disconnect power. second time, turned on music on banshee , after little screwing around opened firefox again. opened yahoo! again, , froze in 3 seconds. had power down again. tried ctrl +alt +backspace, didn't work, ctrl + alt + t, didn't work, , pressed x fast, didn't work. (people told me that.) not know now. can help? , other that, love far, , happy part of ubuntu community!

crazy experience you're having. i've not run myself, i'd suggest trying 2 things.

1st - lets see if it's network problem.

if type ctrl+alt+t should open terminal window. type in

code:

sudo apt-get update

this fetch list of up-gradable packages ubuntu servers (*note not upgrade them).

should run quickly, if output doesn't give errors, you're network "probably" ok. there may better way test this, it's do.


2nd - if runs fine, trying upgrading new version of firefox or try different browser.

since posted here have working browser, can go http://www.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/new/ , download newer version there, extract downloaded folder on ubuntu partition/computer , try running there (i don't believe need install it)

alternatively can go software center, search browsers , have pick of there.
