precise pangolin alpha 1 released!

kate stewart, ubuntu release manager, announced on thursday, december 1st alpha 1 precise pangolin released.

announced reads follows:

pleased bring first set of developer images capture current fleeting reality of our precise pangolin (ubuntu 12.04 alpha 1) starts emerge.

pre-releases of precise pangolin *not* encouraged needing stable system or not comfortable running occasional, frequent breakage. are, however, recommended ubuntu developers , want in testing, reporting, , fixing bugs work towards getting lts release ready.

alpha 1 first in series of milestone cd images released throughout precise development cycle. alpha images known reasonably free of showstopper cd build or installer bugs, while representing recent snapshot of precise. can download them here:

"the fruits of new qa paradigm , strategy , new stable+1 maintenance team have achieved remarkable results," writes martin pitt outlines in post of improvements are. improvements include:

  • the archive consistency reports component-mismatches, uninstallability, etc. appear 20 minutes earlier in oneiric.
  • cd image builds can happen 30 minutes earlier after publisher start, , quicker due moving newer machines. can build i386 or amd64 cd image in 8 minutes! still need wait slow powerpc buildd, moving faster machine there in progress. these improvements lead faster image rebuild turnarounds.
  • candidate cds automatically posted new iso tracker appear.
  • whenever new ubuntu image built (daily or candidate), automatically smoke-tested, know installer works under standard scenarios , produces install boots.
  • due new discipline , stable+1 team, had working daily isos pretty every day. in previous alphas, release engineer(s) pretty had work fulltime day or 2 fix worst uninstallability etc., of went away.
